The Grounds
Located along the Gorge waterway, the heritage property is on the traditional and unceded territory of the Songhees and Xwsepsum Nations. This section of the Gorge waterway is the largest unchanged part of the Gorge. The area has undergone many waves of transformation, from woodland along the waterway, to farmland, and finally to an ornamental garden as part of a family residence. Now at just under two acres, the Point Ellice House grounds feature many established ornamental plants, roses, and trees.

Rooted in Tradition
Historic Kitchen Garden
The historic Kitchen Garden at Point Ellice House continues to reflect early agricultural practices, while also serving as a present-day space to honor Indigenous plant knowledge. Historically, kitchen gardens provided a space to grow food and flowers for Victorian-era residents. This space is still used to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers for community use. We are also proud to integrate Métis knowledge by adding a space dedicated to traditional Métis medicines.
Sharing Space with Nature
Wildlife
Point Ellice House is part of the Victoria Harbor Migratory Bird Sanctuary, and home to a diverse array flora and fauna. The area is ecologically significant, fostering biodiversity in an area surrounded by present-day industry. There is a family of bald eagles that frequent the site, along with a golden eagle, cooper’s hawk, and a pair of owls. Other birds that are regularly spotted here include kingfishers, flickers, herons, seagulls, ravens and very mischievous crows. We also regularly see sea otters and seals from our dock. Racoons, rabbits, and deer also enjoy romping around the woodland, gardens, and lawn.
