1842 – 1869
Catherine was born at the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) fur trading post of Fort Simpson, near present-day Prince Rupert. She was the sixth of eight daughters born to John Work, an HBC trader and chief factor, and Josette Lagacé, his Métis wife. In 1849, Work settled the large family at Fort Victoria and in 1861 Catherine married Charles Wallace at St John’s Church (also known as the Iron Church). Catherine gave birth to four children at Point Ellice House — only Eliza Jane (1865-1924) lived to adulthood. Catherine died of consumption at Hillside Farm, the Work family estate in Victoria, shortly after leaving Point Ellice House. She was buried with three of her children at the Old Burying Ground on Quadra Street (today known as Pioneer Square).
