Peter to Frank, New York, July 2, 1888

5th Avenue Hotel
New York – 2nd July

My dear Frank

We arrived yesterday morning at 7-am & I reached the Hotel, (5th Avenue) at 11-O.C.

Mr. Brewster whose acquaintance I made on the voyage, called here at 1-pm & insisted on my going to his club – “The University” when he put my name down – after lunch I went off to hunt up the Onderdonks under instructions written by you “102 Lexington Avenue” – but found to my cost that no person of that name lived there. I then returned to the Hotel consulted the Directory & found the number to be 802 – again I was out of luck – the house was locked up, blinds down, & though I rested on the steps for 15 minutes & rang the bell constantly there was no response so I stuck a card under the door & left. Today I have been busy as I leave for Montreal at 6-30 – I enclose a bill for two works on Surveying by Gillespie. They will be sent tomorrow, per “Alaska”. They told me that Frontwane’s works are published in England & can be had at H. Southern & Co. and at Spons – both well known booksellers. I hope what I send are exactly what you require & that you will be able to get the others. If not say what I can do further to help you.

No Telegram from you, so I fear you had no good news to report about getting the work in Spain. But you must not be discouraged, see how many others are unemployed. Something will turn up ere long – in the mean time work hard & constantly, & be prepared for whatever may come. May God bless you my dear boy – Always your Affect father
